The youth of today has increasingly lost a sense of cultural identity over the last decade. This disappearance has been precipitated by an increased interest in modern trends and popular culture. Increasingly, the youth of today welcome change and diversity at the expense of preserving culture. Emphasis is placed on the individual as opposed to the collective identity. As a result, the youth in this modern and globalised world is unable to identify with a cultural identity linked to his/her roots in society.

Participants will examine the nature, extent and reasons for the disappearance of the cultural identity of the youth today. They will also consider possible measures that may be adopted to preserve this identity before it is completely lost and propose solutions to make cultural identity relevant, necessary and accessible in this ever-changing world.

(A) Singapore Culture
1. Culture of Singapore
As Singapore is a small and relatively modern amalgam of Chinese, Malay, Indian and European immigrants, the culture of Singapore expresses the diversity of the population as the various ethnic groups continue to celebrate their own cultures while they intermingle with one another.

2. Arts & Culture
Singapore may be young but it has an arts heritage that stems from the great ancient cultures of the East. On the streets or in galleries, you will find cultural expressions that reflect the arts and art forms of China, Malaysia, and India.

Mixed with regional and Western sensibilities, what has emerged is a contemporary and constantly evolving take on the arts, Singapore-style.

(B) Preserving Culture
1. Preserving Culture
The common, every-day, or street definition of culture is what we in the social sciences see as one of the six dimensions, the aesthetic. Drumming and dancing in Africa, drumming and singing in aboriginal North America, ballet and opera in Europe, all of these are part of culture but not the whole of culture.

(C) Globalization and Culture
1. An Alliance of Values
The pressures of globalization are pushing people together, obliterating boundaries through trade, travel, telecommunications and mass migration. If religious faith in such an interdependent world acts to push people apart, it becomes a force for division and conflict.

(D) Effect of Globalization
1. Erosion of Ethnic Identity - Is Globalization to Blame?
Why is the international community concerned about preservation of biodiversity yet indifferent to the erosion of cultural diversity? Why do we consider habitats as worthy of conservation yet make so little effort to accumulate indigenous knowledge concerning them? Can the eroding power of globalisation on minority cultures be checked?
